Most importantly though, they were so imaginative that solving them wasn’t a chore – a means to an end, where the end is usually a further puzzle – but a joy in itself.Īnd not just that! The actual mechanical bits, the metaphorical turning of the jigsaw piece around to see where a piece fits, are just as good. The puzzles were hard enough to be satisfying and make me feel like a smarty pants, but logical enough that I didn’t need to use the walkthrough provided for thicky journalists. The characters were fun and often genuinely funny, most especially the robots, who all have that curious quirk of being self-aware and having personality, which is a terrible thing for a creator to do to a robot. An official release date hasn't been set as of this time.īut those (fairly substantial, I suppose) niggles aside, Beyond A Steel Sky did some very good things. So far, Beyond A Steel Sky is planned for release on PC and iOS, via the Apple Arcade. ![]() Like the original, it shows off a more busy and dynamic side of the post-apocalypse, moving away from the darker color palette and sense of isolation that the genre is known for. With the sequel, there's more of a focus on emulating the comic-book aesthetic, which focuses on bright, vivid colors and narration shown via pop-up text-boxes. ![]() Like the original game, Revolution Software has collaborated with famous comic-book writer and artist Dave Gibbons, whose other works include the Judge Dredd series and Watchmen. In this gameplay video, we show off the game's opening, which reveals what Foster has been up to since the ending of the last game. The original game saw Foster explore Union City, one of the few mega-cities in the wasteland, and the sequel continues that focus on exploration and interaction, this time placing more emphasis on interacting with the communities in and around the city and manipulating the systems of the environment to further your story. Created by Charles Cecil and Revolution Software, the same team behind the original game, along with the Broken Sword series, Beyond A Steel Sky, sees the return of protagonist Robert Foster, a survivor living in the Australian wasteland during the post-apocalypse. Registered trademarks and tradenames are property of their respective owners. So if you do fancy giving it a try, it’s easy enough to get hold of. What is great about Beneath A Steel Sky now is that it is a free giveaway at GOG.com, and has been for as long as I can remember. The script for Beneath A Steel Sky is certainly very funny in places. ![]() Gameplay-wise Beneath A Steel Sky owes a lot of the classic LucasArts adventures of old ( Maniac Mansion Zak McKraken Loom) – it not only looks like one, but it also plays like one, sounds like one, and reads like one. That said: it does add to the atmosphere, and Beneath A Steel Sky is certainly atmospheric. ![]() Meaning: that Gibbons‘ artwork is kinda pixelly and relatively low-res, which makes the whole look of the game somewhat murky. In some respects it is a pity that Beneath A Steel Sky was made back in the days of VGA, where the resolutions were not that high. In this Gibbons lends his artistic talents to the entire game – from the intro and cut-scene graphics, to backgrounds, sprites, and everything else. Gibbons – if you didn’t know – drew Watchmen, as well as Rogue Trooper and countless other stories for 2000AD and other comic outlets during the ’70s and ’80s. Revolution Software‘s second point-and-click adventure (after Lure of the Temptress), first released in 1994, Beneath A Steel Sky is a humorous, futuristic, dystopian, “film noir” mystery, co-designed by legendary comic artist Dave Gibbons.
